IV Iron Therapy
(Monoferric® or Venofer ®)
- The Goal: To quickly restore iron levels for individuals with anemia or iron deficiency who cannot tolerate oral supplements or who require rapid correction.
- Why IV Iron?
- Faster absorption – Oral iron absorption varies widely depending on digestive function. IV iron is delivered directly into the bloodstream, ensuring the full dose is received.
- Gentle on the gut – Oral iron commonly causes heartburn, nausea, and other gastrointestinal side effects. IV iron bypasses the digestive system, avoiding these issues entirely.
- The Pharmacist Advantage: Collaboration with the Sandstone Pharmacies Glenmore Landing team provides access to expert pharmacist support through a complimentary consultation. Dosing is carefully tailored based on weight and laboratory results, and pharmacists are available to support both individuals receiving treatment and prescribers with infusion-related questions.
- Cost:
- $150 infusion fee per Monoferric® infusion plus medication cost where applicable
- $175 infusion fee per Venofer® infusion plus medication cost where applicable
- $150 infusion fee per Ferinject® infusion plus medication cost where applicable
- Required Labs: CBC, Ferritin, Iron Panel (Serum Iron, TIBC, TSAT) within the last month.
- Please Note: All iron infusions must be ordered by a medical doctor, nurse practitioner, midwife, or pharmacist with prescribing authority. Infusion orders should be faxed directly from the prescriber to 403-236-0846. IV iron must be clinically indicated with blood tests completed within the previous month.
Zoledronic Acid
(Osteoporosis)
- The Goal: To strengthen bone density and reduce fracture risk for individuals who cannot tolerate oral therapy, have experienced a recent fracture, or require IV treatment.
- The Pharmacist Advantage: Pharmacist collaboration ensures thorough screening for potential drug interactions and confirmation that calcium and vitamin D levels are optimized prior to treatment. Education and support are provided to address questions related to therapy and expectations.
- Cost: Due to established partnerships, most individuals qualify for a $0 infusion fee
- Required Labs: eGFR, Vitamin D, Calcium within the last month for first infusions, eGFR within the last month and calcium within the last year for repeat infusions.
Biologic Medications
- The Goal: To provide advanced therapy for autoimmune conditions with the aim of improving overall quality of life.
- The Pharmacist Advantage: Close collaboration with experienced pharmacists helps simplify the complexities of high-alert biologic medications, ensuring safe administration, monitoring, and coordinated care throughout treatment.
- Cost: Costs are determined by the manufacturer’s Patient Support Program. Dedicated coordinators assist with enrollment, and the Patient Support Program provides clear information regarding coverage and any out-of-pocket costs.
